Many people believe having dentures gives them an “out” when it comes to cleaning and caring for the mouth. However, that’s not the case. Although dentures replace your missing teeth, you still need to do all you can to keep your mouth in tip-top shape, especially if you have partial dentures. So, to help you take good care of your oral health, Dr. Feriel El Ghaoui and our dental team have some tips for you.

The first tip is to clean your mouth regularly. If you have complete dentures, you only need to clean your mouth once a day, preferably before bed. To clean your mouth, you need to rinse with salt water or antibacterial mouthwash and scrub your palate, tongue, and gums with a soft-bristled toothbrush. If you have partial dentures, you should clean your smile and appliance twice a day. You can do so by using a soft-bristled toothbrush and cleaning the teeth and gums. Make sure to thoroughly clean around the clasps that hold the denture in place. The clasps tend to harbor plaque and promote tooth decay.

The second tip is to massage the gums and underlying bone frequently to keep them stimulated. This will help keep them healthy and strong because it keeps them from shriveling up or deteriorating. It’s also important to maintain a healthy and balanced diet to also maintain a healthy mouth.
